Interview with Jason Von Stein!

Hi everyone!

As we approach premiere dates, I thought it would be fun to get to know the cast & crew of 6 Degrees of Desperation via a short Q&A session that I will post here on a weekly basis. First up is actor Jason Von Stein who played the jock-type character "Greg Bishop". Jason is a working actor who lives in Atlanta and is an ensemble-lead character in our flick. INTERVIEW:

Q. How/where did you hear about auditions for 6DOD? Do you feel you did well at your audition?

Jason: I saw the auditions online (I think it was on Atlanta films) & I thought I did a bad job at the audition. I walked out and thought, "well so much for that." So I was really surprized when I got the part. I think it worked out good though. I’m always better in the role than at the auditions.

Q. What was your initial thought/reaction to reading the script?

Jason: I thought it was funny. It was nice to not get killed for a change.

Q: What was your favorite thing about your role/character?

Jason: I like that "Greg" is a complete character, most people would think "Oh, the dumb jock" but he is more than that. I hope.

Q: What was it like working 17 hour days in Rome, GA?

Jason: It was fun! I am used to the long days now, I got to talk about acting & football so it was a pretty normal day for me. It was cool to be a super-popular kid for a least one day.

Q: What was it like working with Movie Tao Productions?

Jason: Bren & Chuck are great, they let me add things I thought where good and listened to ideas I had, they want the best out of anything they do and it really makes the actors’ job easy when everyone is on the same page. Those kids are going to be alright ;)

Q: Would you work with Movie Tao Pro again?

Jason: Of course. They make me look tall on film.

Q: What is your opinion of this type of project (referring to the 6 Degrees of Genre Project concept), i.e. do you think it has a future? Do you feel it is a project worth pursuing a second time?

Jason: I think its very interesting. It’s an idea that can work well but could be rough if the wrong people did it. We got the right people though.

Q: What was it like recording ADR (lip-synching your lines for sound) for the entire movie, after you wrapped principal photography?

Jason: Easy, much easier than acting.

Q: What was most challenging for you as an actor during this production?

Jason: The first day of shooting, I always want to reshoot the first day because I never think it turns out well. I’m always nervous about the first day.

Q: Is this a project you are proud to show to your friends/family?

Jason: Yeah, I think my family will be happy to see me not covered in blood for a change, I really hope everyone has a good time with this one.

Q: What are you looking forward to at the premieres? (i.e. completed project, seeing co-stars again, meeting industry professionals, having a good time...etc.)

Jason: Nachos.

Q: What projects do you have lined up in the future/where can we see your work outside of this project?

Jason: I have a film that is going to be on PBS in the summer called "Quick Feet, Soft Hands", its a baseball film. I’m also up for some TV shows, so maybe you’ll see me there. Might see me at Wal-Mart as well.

Cool DVD content

As I'm editing the extras for the DVD release, I realized that no one else in the world has any idea what might be on the DVD besides the movie. So, I'm going to drop some golden nuggets on ya!

"Floser Reel" - that's the title of the bloopers menu. It will feature 25 minutes of the Atlanta team's bloopers, a blooper reel from the Charleston team, and a blooper reel from Josh Johnson's Sci-Fi team in Raleigh, NC.

"6 Degrees of Shorts" - that's the title of the menu for alternate scenes for the movie. This is going to be cool! Hobo Productions contributed two scenes for us to use in this featurette. It will also have a fight scene outtake from Rick Bickerstaff's (Charleston, Martial Arts) team.

"Drunken Commentary" - This will be in the menu options for the feature. My husband Hawk and I are going to SC to meet up with Chuck about another movie project. Over that weekend, I suggested we all watch the movie and drink - heavily. So, the commentary will start out pretty well, I think, but as time goes by and as we drink more and more... well - you get the idea. It should be pretty danged funny.

"6 Degrees of Genre" - Chuck and I also plan to film a very short introduction to the 6 Degrees of Genre Project regarding how it got started, where it's going, and how we feel the first one turned out. This will be informational mainly, but hopefully entertaining as well.

"6 Degrees and Beyond" - this will be a featurette of all the different cities' premieres. Of course, this menu will not be available until the final distribution - not the advanced copies to cast and crew.

So, I hope that gets you hyped to buy a DVD, or at least look forward to your free copy if you were involved in "the making of".

Update on 6 Degrees Production

As we move into sound post production, 6 Degrees of Desperation moves closer and closer to a release date. Six producers and countless participants worked together to make this 6 Degrees of Genre project a success.

We'd also like to thank our investors and supporters. Several SEFA members either donated funds for inclusion in the Special Thanks credits or pre-ordered a DVD to help us cover costs. Others check in with us frequently with emails of support and offerings of help in wrapping up the film. We appreciate each and every one of you. As we said from the beginning, Chuck and I wanted this project to be a group effort and you've certainly made that possible.

As far a a release date, nothing is official, but the estimated time of sound post turn around is approximately two months. We originally did not plan to do such extensive sound work, but since reviewing live footage we all agreed that ADRing the entire film was the best route for sound quality. Therefore, people have been working hard behind the scenes to record/secure the ADR, and now that the film has a locked visual edit, our sound producer, Matthias Young, can start composing, scoring, foley, ADR editing, etc. While he is working on that, I will be color correcting the locked edit. So, he and I will have our components of the film ready at the same time, then we can talk premiere/release.

So that as many SEFA members as possible can attend a screening, we have decided to tour the movie to all the winning cities. Those premieres will happen in Tampa (Ben Rosa/Horror), Atlanta (Bren/Chuck), Charleston (Rick Bickerstaff/Martial Arts), Chapel Hill and/or Raleigh (Suspense and Sci-Fi/Josh Johnson). However, the world premiere will be in Columbia, SC, at the Nickelodeon Theatre. We have asked the local producers to start looking for screening locations in the winning team's cities. We'll have an announcement on screening locations near you closer to the end of sound post

For those of you who pre-ordered a DVD copy, those will be released to you after the premieres. Also, at the screenings, we will have signed copies of the DVDs and most of the cast present as well as the producers for a Q&A session after the show.

In conclusion, we're very thankful to everyone who pulled together to make this film happen and look forward to seeing you in the theatres!

As the 6 degrees of genre project kicks off, we understand that many people wanted to be involved in the project but were unable to devote the team. However, you can still get involved.

The Atlanta Team being produced and directed by Movie Tao Productions is seeking donations for the project. As we move forward with the largest cast and production portion of this film, we are seeing a need for additional equipment.

We have three ways you can help.

1.) Donate 5 dollars.

If you choose this option, the 5 dollars will be applied the purchase of the DVD when it is released. This will also get your name in the credit of the film under special thanks.

2.) Donate 12 dollars.

If you choose this option, you will receive a DVD of the film at no extra cost once the DVD is released. We will also have your copy signed by the filmmakers and cast. We are considering including a movie poster but have not decided as of yet. Also, depending on where you are located, this will automatically invite you to the premiere. Please remember that this is subject to where the film is premiered. This option will also get your names in the credits under special thanks.

3.) Contact us letting us know your desire to help and we will send you a list of things that we need. If you are able to supply anything on the list, you will receive special thanks in the credits.

ABOUT 6 DEGREES OF GENRE

6 DEGREES of GENRE is an innovative project created by Bren Pettingill and Chuck Fallaw of Movie Tao Productions. The are currently casting for the first film in what they hope to be a series.

The basic premise is altering the 6 degrees of seperation theory in to a film that transforms between 6 different genres all the while staying with in the same story.

The first film is called 6 DEGREES OF DESPERATION and will feature these genres: Horror, Teen Angst, Suspense, Martial Arts, and SCI-FI.

The project is completed by a total of 12 teams comprised of 1st teams and 2nd teams all of who are filming their own specific genre. There are also alternate teams who film other genres for consideration. All the filmmakers will have their work showcased on the DVD even if their specific scenes are not chosen for the final movie.

Again this is a cutting edge project and we have had to put teams in line for the next project, as we have been overwhelmed with requests to participate in this our maiden attempt to complete this endeavor.

COUPLE OF NOTES

Hello teams,

A couple of notes:

As you know this is a work in progress so please bear with us as updates and or changes are made.

We are going to look at trying to get distribution for this project and in order to do that we have to change a couple of things.

The only thing that truly effects all of the participating teams is that we will have to have you send in your scripts for your scenes as soon as possible. Distributors are going to want to see the whole screenplay and there is not other way to do that than have you send them to us.

In looking at the schedule for this project, we have decided that a fair amount of time to write your script and finalize it to be sent it is July 6th. Hopefully, everyone will have his or her screenplay finished by then as the entire project is due to be finished by the end of August.

As you may have noticed Bren and I are going to be casting on the 7th and the 8th in Atlanta. So we will be well on our way. I hope all of you are having as much success casting and crewing as we are.

In regards to the participation waiver, I hate to beat a dead horse (not that the horse would feel it) but it is very important that we get those back as soon as possible. If you need another copy it is on the blog at http://6degreesofgenre.blogspot.com/

I hate admitting defeat but the video conferencing thing is just to complicated. So, I am going to simply set up a phone number for all of you to call so that we can conference. I am thinking about scheduling that for next Monday or Tuesday. I will send you an email letting you know which day.

Lastly, please let me know the dates and times of your auditions so that I may post them on the website and send out a blast email.

From one of the Producers - just clearing something up

Hey guys, I just want to be sure we're all on the same page. Even though it's been stated a few times, some questions have come up that make me think some of you didn't get all of the emails. A couple of things came up recently and I was like, "huh? We've covered that." So, let me point them out here again, and please comment if you have a question you feel has not been sufficiently covered.

1. Length of scene submission. Any scene submitted to us that is under five minutes will not be considered for the film. Your maximum time is 10 minutes. So, please plan to create a scene that runs between 5 - 10 minutes. Chuck and I are shooting the opening and closing scenes, and ours parts combined are going to run about 44 minutes.

2. Contracts (or "participation agreements") are coming. We stated very early that everyone will be subject to a participation agreement. I feel they should have been sent to you by now, but what with writing the script and all, I just ain't had time for no such task. I have a standard template that I use, but since this project is so unique, I will be adjusting it a bit for this movie. I will have those typed up by tonight (hopefully, cross your fingers for me) but by no later than, let's say, Saturday, depending on what happens in my life between now and the weekend. Let's be clear up front though, we do not guarantee anything. So, please do not come to us three months from now and say, "I thought you said we'd get this or that" cause we didn't. Our promise to you is that if this ends up being much grander than we call could hope and dream, we'll share the glory and take you with us whereever we may go, all of you, if humaly possible. If profits are made, profits will be shared, but we are not guaranteeing any "x" amount of anything to anyone. This is a Movie Tao Production to benefit the SouthEast Film Club. Now, goals that we have promised ourselves are that we will at least see it through to the end. There will be a movie made of this, no matter what. What happens after that depends on how hard we can promote it and how many people we can get to watch it. Trust me, we want to go far. We just can't guarantee how far we'll actually go - esp. before seeing the scenes shot by others.

3. Submission deadline is no later than September 1st, 2007. The submission instructions and address will be on the participation agreement. If you can finish earlier, please go ahead and submit it so we can fix anything that needs to be fixed, if it's minor, and you can resubmit if need be.

Those were the points I was concerned about. Please feel free to call me/us or post here if you have more questions or need further clarification.

JOSH JOHNSON

Raleigh, NC based filmmaker Josh Johnson has been making films and internet video for the past 6 years as well as doing stints directing live television and music videos. Having gone to school as a computer science major and working as a Software Developer, Josh has used his short films as a self imposed film school; learning all different part of making a film. His latest short, "How to be a Girl" has went on to different film festivals and he is currently producing a new made for internet-TV show called "The Rejects" and in early stages of planning his first feature film, "Field Day", a family comedy written by his wife, Nathania.

First, Second and one alternate teams have been decided. I have said all along: first come first serve and these folks have responded quickly and efficiently, which is crucial to this project. Those of you who have expressed interest and are not on this list; you still have the option to sign up as an alternate team. This MUST BE IN TO ME NO LATER THAN THE END OF THE WEEK. Also, we are going to try and limit the number of alternate teams to only 4 MORE SLOTS. If we get interest from more than 4 MORE we will consider it. The alternate teams can choose their own genre. However, let me be clear that the 1st and 2nd teams will be given first shot at the film. Still, all alternates will appear on the DVD unless they are completely inappropriate: Example PORN or HATE FILMS.

The deadline for inclusion in this project is the end of JUNE. Casting will begin at that time and is the responsibility of each team. Thanks to Jack Heape for raising some questions:

Question 1: Do we need a crew list?
For purposes of making sure we have credit lists and pre-production
information: Yes, we would prefer to have a crew list so that we kind of
know what is going on. We do not need casting information as of yet.

Question 2: Are we going to be provided with a finished script?
No. You will receive a synopsis of one scene. In this synopsis, there will
be information you need to use to finish your scene (such as who calls who
to start the scene and who calls who to end the scene) In between those two
functions, you can do whatever you want. We will note the things that cannot
happen, such as showing a character that has already been in another scene.
We want you to get as creative as possible with the actual scene you are
given.

Question 3: Are we to shoot more than one Genre?
No. Once you have been selected for a Genre, that is yours to own. If for
whatever reason we come up short, we may come back to you and ask for
another genre but I do not see that happening.

Question 4: (inferred) Do we compete?
It is your job to do the best you can to ensure that we select
the scene you filmed. It really is more about how it works with the script as a whole. That being
said: Unless the scene is completely outside of the terms we set forth (porn
or hate movie) it will be included on the DVD so everyone gets exposure.

Everything is coming together. Bren is working hard on finishing up your synopsis for each scene. However, before we can send those out, we have to gel the teams. As of now, we only have one team finalized and that is Movie Tao.

I would suggest noting the people in your state and getting in touch with them to work out your details. For instance, TN and SC have several participants but some are spread out all over the state. Find out who you want to work with or if you want to head up the project on your own. I need to know this ASAP. Also, do not forget that your scene needs to crewed and filmed (first right) by members of SEFA. They have first choice, only if you can not find someone can you go to people from outside of SEFA. However, we strongly encourage you to have all participants' sign and join with SEFA. Contact me and I will forward you the information you need in regards to all participants in your area.

Some things not covered previously.

1.) Exclusivity rights to the scenes - i.e., until it goes on DVD, none of the scenes can appear on the Internet or on any part of a compilation CD/DVD, etc., be entered into film festivals, nor uploaded to Myspace page or anywhere else.

2.) No subplots that are not finalized before the end of your scene.

3.) Confidentiality - All team members must sign an agreement that states they are not going to go on the radio/TV/blog spot/other public outlet and speak on our behalf, or on behalf of the film company Movie Tao regarding this project. In other words, if a local radio station wants to interview someone involved in this project, you need to contact us first and we will tell you what needs to be kept hush-hush until the film's release, or ask one of us to help with the interview. This is not to steal anyone's glory, we just need to make sure everything is where it needs to be. We are the only ones who will know the entire story from beginning to end until the film in completed.

More Info on the SIX DEGREES - SEFA/MOVIE TAO FILM PROJECTThe scope of this project is a six degrees of separation using genre or six degrees of genre (if you will). We are going to take the 6 most popular genres of movies, with one story line and combine them in to one movie. Cool? Huh? We are hoping the end result will be so funny, edgy and original that rain will turn in to wine, frogs will not bump their asses when they hop and that one legged guy in the ass kicking contest will finally bring vengance down upon all those who laughed as he tried the Karate Kid crane kick. Then again, it could turn to the Young Guns good bad situation in which the bad news is we only have horse poop to eat and the good news is that there is plenty of it. Ok. I have gone from preaching to meddling.

DRAMA CAN BE NOMINATED BUT IT WILL RULE OUT ONE OF THE OTHERS.
The only genre not available is TEEN ANGST. TEEN ANGST will be handled by MOVIE TAO. We have requests for some of the genres already but to be fair we have decided to put them all out there (minus teen angst) for you to select.

What we would need you to do is send us an email with your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice.

If you wish to include examples of your work in the genres you can do so.

First come first serve with any and all exceptions at the discretion of SEFA and Movie Tao.

As you can imagine with a project of this size there are going to be rules. I hate em but we have to cover ourselves as well as you. The rules below are as they stand now and may change in the future. Again this is at the sole discretion of SEFA and MOVIE TAO. Let me point out this project is a SEFA/MOVIE TAO project for the benefit of SEFA as a whole.

No limit to the number of film crews who can participate. The best scenes will be selected for the movie, the other scenes will be put into a compilation on the DVD so they will receive exposure as well, it's win/win, everyone's work gets seen. Only Copy/Credit/Exposure is offered. We will require participants and all of their team members to sign a waiver regarding it. If anyone in your cast or on your crew is seeking payment, do not promise him or her such on our behalf. If a director/producer of a scene chooses to pay their cast or crew, this payroll obligation will not be passed on to us at the time of submission, nor will it be reimbursed at the time of sale/distribution of the movie. All members are subject to the waiver. This film is a comedy, first and foremost. Other genres/styles may be used; however, the underlying theme must be comedy. (I.e. horror is okay, as long as the end of the scene has a punchline, or it is in the style of "scary movie", that does not mean you can't make it scary as hell, or intense) just has to have a comedic pay off. This goes for all genres. If any part of a script (dialogue) is provided to you, it must be used verbatim, with no variations whatsoever (we will, however, accept subtitles, if necessary). The dialog that may be written in your scene (it will be very, very little) is essential to the scenes being shot by other teams. If the scene is submitted to us without this dialog, your submission will be rejected. However, feel free to interject your own ideas and creativity where there are opportunities for other dialogue. Just do not let it hinder the scene. Do not change the names of the characters given to you. Any other aspect of the characters can be changed, (age, race, religion, etc.) However, if you are given a specific directive, please adhere to it, as it is essential to another team's scene. 30 day deadline from the date you receive the synopsis for your scene. Each team is formed under the chosen directors. Directors are urged to use SEFA members first, then cast/crew in your area as needed. If someone in your area, who is a member of the SEFA wants to participate and cannot find a team, they will be assigned to your team, however the Director will then decide how that team member can participate. DIRECTOR'S MUST HAVE OPEN COMMUNICATION WITH CHUCK AND BREN. Each team is required to read the synopsis and write a 5 - 8 minute scene based on the synopsis. Please do not exceed 8-10 minutes. Scenes fewer than five minutes will not be considered for the film. This scene must be written, cast, produced, and completely edited before submission. Send your scene back to Bren Pettengill, who will edit the scenes together to make a seamless movie out of them, or add your scene to the DVD as an extra feature. Please adhere to the following: ? No frontal nudity ? No underage nudity of any kind ? No product placement/promotion ? No racist/hate dialog ? No promotion/insinuation of underage sex, underage drinking, or underage habitual drug use ? Do not soundtrack your scene - Bren Pettengill will handle scoring and soundtracking. However, please do looping and foley. If your scene cannot be heard/has poor sound, it will be sent back to you for the proper adjustments, or rejected. ? Do submit original scoring/music to be considered for the entire film (if you have any). A waiver will need to be signed by the people who produced the music. ? A GL2 movie camera quality or better must be used to shoot the scene. This is for continuity sake. Please do not use Hi-Def, as most people do not have access to that equipment and will not be using it. Try to stay in a range between a GL2 and Panasonic's newest mini-DV camera line (not on Hi-Def). This includes the XL cameras as well. ? Shoot in wide screen/letterbox format ? Submit your film by printing the edit back to tape, and submit the mini-DV. DO NOT submit a SONY mini-dv tape to Bren Pettengill - SONY tapes are not compatible with her deck and nearly wrecked it one time. Please use a Fuji, Maxell or other off-brand (this is just for the submission, use any other mini-dv tapes you want for your shoot) for your submission. ? Do not imitate a voice or likeness of a celebrity, unless you have written permission from that celebrity to do so and can submit that written permission on to us at the time of submission. ? Do not spoof another movie. Be original and creative. We will do a "spoof" project later on; this first project should be all original material. This does not mean your scene can't be influenced by your favorite movies/directors - just don't go too far down the road of copyright infringement. We don't want trouble. JDisclaimers: ? We reserve the right to reject your scene based upon the above-listed guidelines, and for any other reason we deem appropriate. If a scene is rejected from the movie, it will still appear on the DVD. ? We reserve the right to make editorial adjustments to your scene IF it appears in the movie. An original cut of your scene will also run on another feature of the DVD. ? All copyrights will be transferred into the SEFA, however all participants will be credited appropriately in the film. This will be in the participation waiver. ? If a scene submitted is blatant pornography, or other extremely unacceptable genre, we reserve the right not to include it on the DVD at all. No one will be compensated in any way for participating in this project and having their scene rejected from the project. Just make sure this doesn't happen to you! ? We do not guarantee a distribution deal, "x" amount of public or festival screenings, or even that the project will see the light of day. We're human; things may not go our way. We do guarantee that we will do our best to market this film above all others of Movie Tao's once it is complete. We will do our best to get it into as many hands as possible and we will do our best to get at least a distribution deal. We guarantee at least one year of hard/standard promotions and more if we get some mileage out of the film. Take this email as a prompt to send in your genre selection. For the most part, I will be responding to all questions and suggestions in mass. If you have a specific question, please give us time to get back to you. Based upon participation interest, we will set a date to begin shooting and a deadline date in the near future. Please be sure to read all emails on this project promptly if you plan to participate.

Bren and I have a limitless amount of charity and giving in us, however we have no idea where this project will go. There is not a precedent for it. I want to be clear in stating we are not greedy and if this turns in to something more than what we expected, Bren and I will determine the best way to handle it. But expect to continue with this project on a volunteer basis.

Notes: I get between 600 to 700 emails on a slow day. I do a pretty good job of keeping up with them but it can get difficult at times. So, I have set up a filter on my email that will forward any emails with the words SIX DEGREES to a specific folder. PLEASE include the subject SIX DEGREES on any and all emails related to this project. For example: SIX DEGREES: quick question. Or SIX DEGREES: you suck, Whatever it may be.

THE BEGINNING

This is the first email that went out about this project:

ATTENTION FILMMAKERS:

The SE Film Association along with Movie Tao Productions is working on a
very unique project. This project just might be the first of it's kind. It
is cutting edge and very likely to bring a good bit of attention to those
who participate.

The basic idea:

Movie Tao Productions is working hard on a screenplay to be filmed and
created entirely by the SE Film Association and Movie Tao. The screenplay is
going to incorporate a six degrees of separation theme. The participating
filmmakers will each be sent a scene from the script to film, cast and
produce. The only thing that we will ask is that the screenplay is not
changed at all. You can have the action and direction go however you wish.

Here is the best part; you do not have to go anywhere. We are going to
incorporate your location in to the screenplay. So you get to stay home and
is not in anyway restricted by location.

This is not going to be a paid production. It is strictly to help generate
awareness for the SE Film Association and the filmmakers that are involved.

Actor's we are not as of yet accepting headshots as we do not all of the
locations.
